Toy Safety Checklist for Babies and Toddlers

How we write: we have not run hands-on product tests. These guides explain what to look for at each stage and why, so you can judge any toy yourself. We never publish invented prices, ratings, or reviews; check the retailer for current details.

Before buying any toy for a baby or toddler, run through this list. It's general guidance, not a substitute for the manufacturer's instructions.

What to look for

  • Check the age grading on the package and follow it.
  • Under 3: avoid small parts. The US CPSC has a small-parts rule for toys meant for children under 3; see CPSC toy safety.
  • Avoid button batteries and strong small magnets in reach of young children.
  • Check for strings or cords that could pose a strangulation risk.
  • Look up recalls at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
