Montessori Toys for 0–3 Months: What Actually Helps

How we write: we have not run hands-on product tests. These guides explain what to look for at each stage and why, so you can judge any toy yourself. We never publish invented prices, ratings, or reviews; check the retailer for current details.

Newborns mostly look, listen and begin to grasp. Montessori-style play at this age is simple: high-contrast images to look at, a safe floor space, and slow, unhurried time together.

What to look for

  • High-contrast black-and-white cards or mobiles placed where baby can see them, out of reach.
  • A firm, flat floor mat for supervised tummy time.
  • Lightweight rattles or grasping rings sized so they can't be swallowed.

Example to research

Play gyms combine a mat and hanging items. One widely discussed option is the Lovevery Play Gym (plain link; check the brand page for current details).

Safety first: always follow the age grading on the package and supervise play. For children under 3, avoid small parts (see our safety checklist).
